Secretary General: NATO is a bedrock of security for both Europe and North America
Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg wrapped up a two-day visit to the United States on Thursday (13 April 2017) with a town hall meeting at George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs. Mr. Stoltenberg stressed that NATO is as important as ever in a more uncertain world, and that its strength lies in unity and the ability to adapt to a changing security environment.

Secretary General welcomes strong US commitment to NATO
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg visited the White House on Wednesday (12 April 2017) for his first meeting with President Donald J. Trump and his security team. Following the meeting, Mr. Stoltenberg welcomed the “very strong commitment of the United States to the security of Europe” as demonstrated “in words but also in deeds.” The two leaders agreed on the enduring importance of NATO, and discussed preparations for the May meeting of NATO leaders in Brussels, including NATO's role in the fight against terrorism, and fairer burden-sharing in the Alliance.

High-level Public Diplomacy Forum kicks off NATO Week in Georgia
Current security challenges and how effective public diplomacy can contribute to addressing them were the main focus of the Public Diplomacy Forum in Tbilisi on 10-11 April. Discussions covered a range of topics including hybrid warfare, strategies to counter propaganda, strategic communications and the role of social media.

NATO welcomes opening of European Centre for Countering Hybrid Threats
Several NATO Allies and European Union members came together in Helsinki on Tuesday (11 April 2017), formally agreeing to establish a European Centre of Excellence for Countering Hybrid Threats in the Finnish capital. At a ceremony attended by Finnish Foreign Minister Timo Soini, officials from NATO and the European Union welcomed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for the Centre, which will open later in 2017.

Promoting civilian oversight of the Afghan armed forces
A pilot course on civilian oversight of the armed forces involving Afghan experts was hosted by the Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy (ADA) University in Baku, from 3 to 7 April 2017. The course was conducted by Afghanistan’s Marshal Fahim National Defence University (MFNDU) with the support of NATO, the Romanian National Defence University “Carol I” and the Bulgarian “G.S. Rakovski” National Defence College.

Deputy Secretary General: Ukraine is a valued NATO partner
NATO Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller reaffirmed the Alliance’s strong support for Ukraine in a speech on Thursday (6 April 2017). Speaking at the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, she said a recent meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Commission underscored the Alliance’s ongoing and steadfast support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Deputy Secretary General said Ukraine is a valued NATO partner and that, “NATO does not, and will not, accept Russia’s illegal and illegitimate annexation of Crimea. And we condemn Russia’s ongoing destabilization in eastern Ukraine.”

Statement by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on US strikes in Syria
Following this week’s horrendous chemical weapons attacks in Khan Shaykhun, which killed dozens of people, including many children, the US launched a strike against Shayrat Airfield in Syria.
