Belgium and Germany to take over NATO's Baltic Air Policing
From September, the Belgian Air Force will take the lead of NATO's Baltic Air Policing mission, supported by the German Air Force. A Belgian contingent of F-16 fighters will be based at Šiauliai, Lithuania, while German Eurofighter Typhoons will fly out of Ämari, Estonia. NATO Allies have taken turns safeguarding Baltic airspace since Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania joined the Alliance in 2004.

NATO ships to make Norwegian coast safer
One of NATO’s naval groups is visiting Trondheim on Friday (10 August 2018), and from there it will go on to search for sea mines dating back to World War II. The operation will make the waters safer for fishermen and shipping in the area.

NATO Military Chiefs of Defence to meet in Warsaw
NATO’s highest Military Authority, the Military Committee, will meet from 28-30 September 2018, in Warsaw, Poland. The meeting will be hosted by the Chief of the Polish General Staff, Lieutenant General Rajmund Andrzejczak.

2018 marks the 60th anniversary of the NATO Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme, which has built a strong track record of promoting scientific projects and collaboration among scientists from NATO countries, maximising the return on research investments and strengthening the transatlantic bond.

1958 - 2018: The Science for Peace and Security Programme celebrates its 60th anniversary
2018 marks the 60th anniversary of the NATO Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme, the foundations of which were laid on 13 December 1956, when the North Atlantic Council endorsed a report to enhance non-military cooperation and coordination within NATO in line with Articles 2 and 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty. Known as the Report of the Three Wise Men, it proposed concrete activities to enhance cooperation in the areas of politics, economics and science. The final Report of three NATO Ministers, i.e. Lester B. Pearson (Foreign Minister of Canada), Gaetano Martino (Foreign Minister of Italy), and Halvard Lange (Foreign Minister of Norway), included a dedicated subchapter on scientific and technological cooperation.

Secretary General: NATO is united in support for Georgia’s security
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze to NATO Headquarters on Wednesday (18 July 2018). The Secretary General praised Georgia’s contributions to the Alliance’s training mission in Afghanistan and the NATO Response Force. He also reiterated NATO’s support for Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations. “At the Summit last week, all 29 Allies reaffirmed that Georgia will become a member of NATO. This is in line with the decision we made at our Bucharest Summit in 2008,” he said.

GMF releases study on NATO’s Mediterranean Dialogue
The German Marshall Fund on Friday (13 July 2018) presented a new study on NATO’s Mediterranean Dialogue partnership programme, offering recommendations to take the 20-year-old programme forward based on interviews with officials and experts from the Middle East and North Africa and NATO.
